The crime in Sunninghill is at present at its lowest levels since implementation of the Sunninghill Community Security Initiative in 2007. The graphs below show the successes achieved. The area that still causes problems in Sunninghill is the theft out of and theft of motor vehicles, most of these occurring at the Chilli Lane Shopping Centre in Rivonia Road.

At this time we would like to warn residents of a gang of house breakers operating in Sandton, where a white bakkie driven by a white middle aged man accompanied by two black males, visit complexes and home under the guise of wanting to work on fault gates. These criminals then break into the home while the white male waits in the vehicle. At this time, this crime has not occurred in Sunninghill but various other suburbs in Sandton have been targets of these criminals. Should anyone of this description arrive at your home or complex, please contact Savika on 0861Savika or 0861728452.

Dear Community,

Time for an update on the goings on in Sunninghill.

Crime: After having a slight “hiccup” two weeks ago I am relieved to be able to tell you our crime is once again back down to our previous low levels. We have not experienced any smash and grabs for some time now, thanks to the cameras donated by Eskom and the Clear Vu fencing donated by Cochrane International. House breakings average at around 1 every two to three weeks for the entire Sunninghill. The majority of our crime still remains theft out of motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicles.

K60/Van Der Bijl: This road continues to cause problems for us with regards to accidents mostly caused by speeding vehicles. We thank the Metro Police who continue to trap for us along this road. In addition to this Sunninghill Community has appealed to the authorities to install a permanent speeding camera on this road. See our latest newsletter on the web which will be distributed later this week. www.sunninghillnews.co.za

Poolhall: Thank you to all those who sent in objections to the application for a liquor license, the response was overwhelming and these were hand delivered for us by Jerry Toms of Sunninghill Community. Objections to the application for rezoning from Special to places of amusement are due soon so please don’t forget to send those to Kerry Mawson asap. For more information, visit the website: www.sunninghillnews.co.za

Sunninghill Community AGM: If you are a signed up member of the Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Association don’t forget the Sunninghill Community AGM on the 29th. If you can’t make it, it is very important that you send your proxy’s through to us. If you don’t have the proxy, once again visit our website and download it.

Grass cutting: We are once again appealing to residents to assist us with donations to cut the grass around the suburb that is not being done by a lack of budget by Province. Donations can be made to: Sunninghill Ratepayers Association, FNB, Rivonia, Account No. 5882 001 3159, Branch Code. 250355, Ref. NAME-Grass cutting.

Have you lost your dog? A gorgeous little dog was found on Saturday afternoon in Tana Road. He is so sweet and was just recently groomed (green bows) in his hair. He has been dropped off at the Sunninghill Vet yesterday. See picture below

STATEMENT FROM MASSMART REGARDING ARMED ROBBERY AT BUILDERS WAREHOUSE, RIVONIA, JOHANNESBURG

Massmart can confirm that at approximately 06:40 this morning, four armed men confronted staff opening the Builders Warehouse store in Rivonia;

The armed men forced the Duty Manager into the administration office at gun point and demanded that the safe be opened;

The Duty Manager was unable to open the safe due to the very strict security measures in place at the store;

The armed men then left the store and in what appears to be an attempt to secure a get away vehicle, they confronted a member of the public who was parked in the parking lot;

A scuffle ensued and it is with the deepest and utmost regret that we have to that confirm the owner of the vehicle was shot and fatally wounded;

We are very grateful to the South African Police Service who responded very quickly and co-ordinated a pursuit of the men involved;

Senior Management from Builders Warehouse immediately travelled to and are on the scene;

The store, which is now a crime scene, is currently not open for trade;

Trauma counsellors will be available to assist the members of our staff and the public who were present.

At this stage, our thoughts are with the family of the victim in this incident to whom we extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathies and to whom we will provide all assistance as required.

Further information will be made available as appropriate.

ENDS

After having unbelievably low crime statistics over the past few months, Sunninghill this past week had a number of incidents occur.

• On Sunday morning while driving down Nanyuki Road the Savika Sector Manager saw an individual walking at the side of the road carrying what appeared to be a very heavy black bin bag. He stopped to question the individual only to find out that he was carrying stolen goods. The Reaction Manager called for backup and arrested this individual and two others who were walking just ahead of him. The Saps were called and the suspects admitted to having committed a house breaking but would not say where. After driving around Sunninghill Park and Sunninghill Estates with the suspects for some time without any joy the suspects were taken to the police station and charged with being in possession of stolen goods. Later on Sunday night a resident of Sunninghill Estates who had been away for the weekend phoned the Savika Control room to inform them that he had been broken into. Paul Kruger from Savika escorted the resident to the police station where all his property was recovered and the case changed to House Breaking. Once again Savika have proved themselves as being not only a good Security Provider to Sunninghill but as being pro-active in stopping crime. One of the suspects was linked to another housebreaking that occurred in Parkmore recently. Well done Savika

• On Sunday at around midday a resident of Sunninghill Park was a victim of a driveway robbery in Airdlin road. The victims had been shopping at Sandton City and it is suspected that they were followed home. The suspects stole the victim’s diamond ring, cellphone, purse etc. They were driving a red golf GTI with mag wheels and a grey decal on the right hand driver door and escaped along Rivonia Road heading towards Malindi road next to Leeukop Prison. All information has been handed to the Saps and our contacts at Sandton City for investigation.

• On Tuesday at around 11h20 a resident of Sunninghill Estates saw suspects lifting her gate to her home and reversing their car into the property. She set off her alarm and the suspects fled in a silver Mercedes Benz.

• This morning at around 06h45 four suspects tried to commit an armed robbery at Builders Warehouse in Witkoppen Road. Unfortunately at this time a customer entered the shop and was shot dead by one of the suspects. We have heard that one suspect was arrested by the Sandton Saps. Our thanks to the Sandton Police for responding so swiftly and their efficient actions that resulted in this arrest. We have no doubt with one suspect behind bars the others will soon be arrested. Although we are not aware as to who the customer was that was killed – the community of Sunninghill extends their condolences to the family of this gentleman. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Community,Re: Erf 526/2-IR & RE/525/2-IR

Sunninghill Community met with Abland this week regarding withdrawing objections to the township application on the above property.

Councillor Deppe was present and explained that once she had received the new application she would forward a copy to the Community giving them her comments. Please see attached changed zoning application from Abland.

A site plan of the development is available for viewing at the Sunninghill Community Office. In light of the above we advise all who objected to wait until such comments are received from the Ward Councillor and communicated with you before withdrawing your objections.

Re: Proposed Pool Hall

It has been brought to our attention that there is an intention to open a “pool hall” in the Sunhill Shopping Centre on the corner of Tana and Naivasha Roads. Sunninghill Community has contacted the owner of this shopping centre and he has confirmed that this is the intention. We have also spoken to our Ward Councillor Annette Deppe and the Johannesburg Councils Region A Operational Manager for clarification and advice.

The Sunninghill Community office has received communication from a number of residents who have voiced their concern over the above and we would like to inform all those who are concerned and live in the vicinity of the process that needs to be followed and action taken and to be taken:

We quote from an email sent to us by the Councils Region A Operational Manager

· “Please note that the applicant must first apply for consent from the Council to operate a Pool Hall.

· The granting of a licence to operate the pool hall will only be considered after consent has been granted and an acoustic compliance certificate has been submitted to the Environmental Pollution Officer.

· The applicant must also physically apply for an Item 2e, Schedule 1 licence, with this department. The latter’s conditions include, consent use approval, occupancy certificate, approved building plans, fire safety certificate.

· The application for consent will only be considered after taking into account all written comments from the affected parties. The acoustic compliance certificate must be done to the satisfaction of Environmental Pollution Officer. “

Please take note that none of the above has as yet been applied for and should they attempt to go ahead without the above they will be closed down immediately. Should the applicant however follow the correct process as stated above, besides all the conditions laid out, there will be an opportunity for residents and those most likely to be affected by this facility to object. The applicant will have to advertise for consent of use and the one way he has to do this is by placing “notices” on site in clear view.

Our Ward Councillor is working closely with Sunninghill Community in keeping tabs on what transpires at this site and we advise all residents to keep their eyes open for such notices. We too will be checking. If you see such a notice, please advise our office – Kerry Mawson on suncommunity@iafrica.com. Once such a notice appears, Sunninghill Community will correspond with all our residents and call for written objections from you should you not be happy with a pool hall being opened in this centre.

Our Ward Councillor has offered to host a public meeting of concerned residents to answer any questions you might have and explain in more detail the process to be followed. This meeting will take place on Monday the 13th of February @ 18h30 at the Rivonia Recreation Club, 7 Achter Rd, Paulshof
